Holly @Mud.witch
Holly is a Brisbane based artist that works mainly with ceramics. She started making ceramics 2 years ago when she was an art teacher aid and quickly fell in love with the practice. Over the years she developed her style mainly while living in the Gold Coast and being influenced by living there.
She went through many struggles with her art. Recently finding out she as ADHD made her realise why sitting down for so long was a challenge for her. Ceramics require a lot of time in one go and time in general which made it frustrating. Some can take up to a week which makes it difficult to constantly make art. Sometimes this process can work in her favour as she can use it as a meditation like ritual that fights the effects of ADHD.
Holly has found ceramics to be a very material heavy process. This has lead to some experimentation in other art forms such as print making. She uses it as something that is quick to make, which makes it easier to sit down and start creating. Ceramics are more satisfying the print making to her so she will opt to make sculptures over print making.
It’s interesting to her to see how people interact with her work. “People don’t understand that it’s not a vase or anything like that. It’s it very own thing.” This makes her hesitant to display them as vases even when she gets more sales that way. She feels as if they are their own object with meanings outside of their possible usability.
Holly plans to continue exploring the different ceramics and styles within. Every day making new ideas and exploring new possibilities for her work.
